As Secretary of State Hillary Clinton addressed students in Doha this week, it appeared that President Barack Obama's administration had finally realized that Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps has taken on a controlling — not subservient — role among the Iranian leadership. "Iran is moving toward a military dictatorship," she said.

A majority of backbench MPs on Thursday called on the Government to take urgent measures at the United Nations for the world body to protect 3,400 Iranian opposition members based at Camp Ashraf in Iraq. The cross-party MPs were backed in their call by more than 150 Peers.

The latest round of talks by major world powers to stop Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons last week finished without agreement on any new sanctions; more consultations were agreed instead. But Tehran is pushing forward with its nuclear program.

 

France's ambassador to the United Nations, Christophe Bigot, rightly said 2010 is going to be ``an Iranian year,'' adding, ``We have to work a lot on Iran. We are planning definite decisions to be taken by the United Nations Security Council. Our patience is running out.'' But the solution remains as evasive as ever.
