Karaj, Iran, May 27 – Overcrowding in Gohardasht Prison in Karaj, west of Tehran, has created extremely unsanitary conditions for prisoners. On average, 10 to 20 prisoners are added to the prison population every day. There is a shortage of prison cells, so many prisoners sleep in the corridors. In one ward, with 422 detainees, toilets are dysfunctional and prisoners must use the toilets in another ward which itself houses more than 300 prisoners.

Rome, May 27 - Shiva Nazar Ahari, 26, journalist, human rights activist, blogger and reporter of the Committee of Human Rights Reporters was put on trial on 23 May on a charge that could lead to a death sentence. Another member of this committee, Kouhyar Goudarzi, remains imprisoned without trial, the Italian Peace Reporter said.

Iran's puritanical guardians of morality have stepped up their cultural war against those who dress too modern for their tastes, sharpening class and social tensions just two weeks before the anniversary of the nation's disputed presidential elections.Days after Friday prayer leaders delivered fiery sermons in which they called for a clampdown on women dressing immodestly, morality police squads began cracking down on youngsters sporting figure-hugging outfits or hairdos deemed un-Islamic.

TEHRAN (Reuters) - Iran on Monday executed a brother of the detained leader of a Sunni Muslim rebel group behind the deadliest bomb attack in the Islamic Republic in years, official media reported.
Abdolhamid Rigi, a convicted member of Jundollah (God's Soldiers), was hanged in a prison in the southeastern city of Zahedan, after his execution was postponed last July and again in December in order to get more information from him.

Paris, 19 May 2010: The Tehran prosecutor announced on Saturday 15 May that the death sentences pronounced against three out of 10 post-election protesters charged with “moharebeh”(fighting god) have been upheld by the appeal court. In all, he said, 217 sentences against post-election protesters have been confirmed by the appeal courts.
