30 arrested at Tehran cemetery Tuesday, 15 June 2010

Tehran, Jun. 15 – At least 30 people were arrested in clashes between security forces and opposition supporters on Tuesday afternoon in Tehran's Behesht-e Zahra cemetery.Dozens were wounded during the clashes which took place at about 16.45 local time.Earlier, some 200 security agents had set up barricades at the entrance of the cemetery.

 At a Congressional briefing on Thursday, June 10, several members of the U.S. House of Representatives emphasized the need for the continued U.S. protection of Camp Ashraf in Iraq. The bi-partisan call was made in light of the announcement by the United States military that the U.S. intends to evacuate Camp Grizzly in Ashraf and turn it over to the Iraqi Security Forces by July 1st. Many members at the briefing, which coincided with the anniversary of the uprising in Iran, also called for the removal of Iran's main opposition, the People's Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK), from the State Department's list of Foreign Terrorist Organizations (FTO). The following is the text of speech by Congressman  Brad Sherman (D-CA), Chairman of the U.S. House Subcommittee on Terrorism, Nonproliferation and Trade.

Tehran University demonstrators chant "Death to Khamenei"

Tehran University students chanted “Death to Khamenei” in their demonstration today. This protest was held on the anniversary of bloody raid of the clerical regime’s suppressive forces on the dormitory of the University of Tehran at midnight, June 14. The students carried pictures of their slain comrades and attack on the University dormitory. Regime’s suppressive forces attacked students brutally in order to disperse them but the protest that started at 15:00 by hundreds of students of Technical College of the university lasted for hours.

Australia announces Iran sanctions

 Australia will take out its own sanctions against Iran as it seeks to help curb the regime's nuclear program.Foreign Minister Stephen Smith has announced Australia will impose sanctions on a bank, a shipping line, and an individual involved in a construction company.
The move comes on top of a fresh round of UN sanctions imposed last week.

Clashes erupt in central Tehran

Tehran, Jun. 12 - Clashes erupted on Saturday between security forces and opposition supporters in central Tehran, an Iran Focus correspondent reported.Around 250 people were protesting at 14.45 (local time) in Jomhouri Street, 100 metres from the Hafez bridge, chanting "Allah-o Akbar" (God is the greatest), "death to the dictator" and "death to Khamenei" in reference to Iran's Supreme Leader.

Germany Probes Russian Shipments to Iran

 German prosecutors are investigating whether Russia's main nuclear exporter broke European rules by routing Iran-bound cargo through Europe—an incident that diplomats say turned into a major battleground as world powers hashed out international sanctions against Iran.The shipments wouldn't break sanctions agreed on at the United Nations, including new rules approved Wednesday. But the U.S. and European Union plan to use their own regimes to put bigger obstacles in front of Iran's nuclear development—and to make up for the weaknesses of the U.N. sanctions, which were softened to get agreement from Russia and China.

Iran state TV blames Neda murder on opposition

Tehran, Jun. 11 - On the eve of the anniversary of last summer's anti-government protests, Iran's Channel 3 state television aired a 50-minute program on the murder of Neda Agha Soltan, entitled "Intersection."Neda became a symbol of the opposition movement last June when she was shot and killed by a government militiaman.

 The courageous residents and youths of Tehran on Friday night carried out another nightly protest by taking to their rooftops and expressing their hatred towards the ruling clerical regime. Starting at 22:30 local time, chants of “God is great,” “down with velayat-e faqih [absolute clerical rule],” “[mullahs’ Supreme Leader Ali] Khamenei is a murderer, his rule is illegitimate,” “death to dictator,” “death to Khamenei,” and “Khamenei shame on you, let go of our country” resonated on rooftops in various parts of Tehran.

Putin says freezing missile sale to Iran: France

PARIS (Reuters) - Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has told France that Moscow will freeze a delivery of S-300 missiles to Iran after passage of extended U.N. sanctions against Tehran, the French president's office said Friday.Russia had earlier insisted on its right to carry out the air defense contract. Its rethink underlined how the tolerance of non-Western big powers for Iran's disputed nuclear activity is fading, and could deny Iran formidable protection against any military attacks on its atomic installations.
